The housing here
Derby's stock ranges from the dense Victorian terraces of Normanton, Peartree and Pear Tree Street, through the substantial interwar semis of Littleover, Mickleover and Allestree, to city-centre apartments and converted mill and warehouse buildings near the Derwent.
The water here is hard — limestone country. Scale is the main thing that kills a combi's plate heat exchanger, and an in-line scale reducer at seventy-five pounds is the cheapest insurance you can buy on a boiler you want to keep for fifteen years.
What that means for your boiler

The most straightforward stock we work in. The boiler is usually already in the kitchen on an outside wall, the flue run is under a metre, and a like-for-like combi swap is a comfortable single day. If there is still a cylinder in the airing cupboard, this is the housing type where converting to a combi pays off most obviously.
Bigger radiator circuits and more often two bathrooms, which is where combi sizing starts to matter. If both bathrooms genuinely get used at once, our quote will point you at a system boiler and a cylinder rather than sell you a large combi that will still disappoint you.
Usually a combi already, usually a short flue, and usually the simplest job on our list. The thing to watch is whether the flue terminates over a walkway or communal area, which is one of the questions we ask before pricing rather than after.
Solid gritstone walls, deep window reveals and often no cavity. Coring a flue through 500mm of stone is slower work than through a modern cavity wall, and it is already priced in. What matters more is that these houses lose heat, so undersizing the boiler is a false economy here.
