Questions

Everything people ask us, answered properly.

Including the awkward ones. Especially the awkward ones.

How can you give me a fixed price without seeing the boiler?+

Because a boiler swap is a far more predictable job than the industry likes to admit. Fifteen questions tell us the boiler type, the flue route, the hot water demand and the radiator count — and those four things determine almost the entire cost.

What they cannot tell us is whether there is asbestos behind the fire, or whether the flue can be reached from a ladder. Those are the only two things we exclude, and we say so plainly rather than burying them.

What if the job turns out to be different on the day?+

Then it is our problem, not yours — provided the answers you gave were accurate. That is the whole deal. We print every answer next to your price so there is no ambiguity about what was agreed.

If something genuinely was not declared and the job changes, we do not ambush you with a bill. We stop, explain, and you can either accept a revised price or walk away with a full refund. We would rather lose the job than have that argument in your kitchen.

Do I have to send photos?+

Not to get a price. You will see your number before you give us so much as a first name.

Once you have booked, we do ask for three photos — the boiler, the flue outside and the gas meter. It takes a minute and it is how we protect the fixed price for both of us. If you would rather not, ring us and we will send an engineer round instead.

How quickly can you fit it?+

Next working day installation is available wherever we have an engineer free in your area, and most jobs go in inside a week. You pick the date yourself on screen — the calendar only offers days we currently have an engineer for, so nothing you are shown is a maybe. We do not promise a date we have not shown you.

If your boiler has failed completely and you have no heating or hot water, say so on the phone. We keep capacity back for exactly that and will get to you sooner.

Is the price really everything?+

Yes. The number you see includes the boiler, the fitting, the flue, the filter, the flush, the thermostat, the carbon monoxide alarm, taking the old boiler away, your Gas Safe certificate, the warranty registration and VAT.

There is no call-out fee, no delivery charge, no 'materials' line and no congestion levy. If we quote it, that is what you pay.

Who actually does the work?+

Our own Gas Safe registered engineers, in our own vans. EmberNord is not a lead-generation site that sells your details to whichever local firm bids for them.

That is also why we only cover the East Midlands, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. We would rather be genuinely good in twelve postcode areas than mediocre across the country.

What warranty do I get?+

The manufacturer's warranty — seven, ten or twelve years depending on the boiler — registered by us on the day, so you never have to remember to do it. Every manufacturer warranty on the market is conditional on the boiler being serviced every year, and on being registered promptly after the install; we do the registration, you keep the servicing up.

On top of that you get our own two-year workmanship guarantee. That is double what the national online sellers offer, and it covers our work rather than the manufacturer's parts.

What is the difference between a combi, a system and a regular boiler?+

A combi heats water on demand — one box on the wall, no cylinder, no tanks. A system boiler heats a hot water cylinder, usually in an airing cupboard, with no tanks in the loft. A regular boiler does the same but with a cold tank and a small feed tank in the loft.

Most homes with one bathroom are better off with a combi. Homes with two or more bathrooms in simultaneous use are usually better off with a system boiler and a cylinder, because a combi can only heat so much water at once.

Should I convert to a combi?+

If you have one bathroom and you want your airing cupboard back, almost certainly yes. You lose nothing and gain space and mains-pressure hot water.

If you have two bathrooms that get used at the same time, be careful. A combi big enough to cope exists, but a system boiler with an unvented cylinder will serve you better. Our quote tool will say so rather than selling you the wrong thing.

How long does a boiler installation take?+

A straight swap in the same position is a single day, usually finished mid-afternoon. A conversion — taking out a cylinder and tanks — is two days.

A back boiler removal is also two days and is the messiest job we do. We sheet up properly, but breaking a boiler out of a fireplace is not a tidy activity.

Will I need a power flush?+

A chemical flush and an inhibitor are included with every install as standard, and that is enough for most systems.

A full power flush is worth adding if your radiators are cold at the bottom, if the water that comes out of them is black, or if the system is more than about twenty-five years old and has never been cleaned. We suggest it in the quote if your answers point that way, but we never tick it for you.

Do I need a magnetic filter?+

Yes, and it is included. Most manufacturers now require one for the warranty to stand. We fit it as standard rather than presenting it as an upgrade, because a warranty that is void is not a warranty.

What if my gas pipe is too small?+

Upgrading the gas supply to 22mm between the meter and the boiler is included in your price. It is one of the most common surprise charges in this industry and we have simply built it in.

Upgrading the meter itself is your gas supplier's job, not ours, and it is free from them. We will tell you if it is needed.

Can I keep my existing thermostat?+

If it is a smart thermostat — a Hive, a Nest, a tado — yes, we will reconnect it at no charge. If it is an old dial on the hall wall, we will replace it with the programmable one included in your price.

Are you actually Gas Safe registered?+

Yes. EmberNord is a trading name of Qualis Energy Limited and our Gas Safe registration number is on every page of this site and on the certificate we issue you.

You can check any registration at gassaferegister.co.uk, and you should — not just ours.

What if I change my mind?+

You have fourteen days from ordering to cancel for any reason at all, and we will not charge you. That is your legal right and we are not going to make you look it up.

If you cancel after we have started work you pay for what has been done, which is the same everywhere.

Do you sell my details?+

No. We are not a comparison site and we are not a lead generator. Your details go to our office and our engineer, and nowhere else. Read the privacy policy — it is short and it is in English.
