Getting rid of the cylinder

Converting from a cylinder system to a combi is the most popular job we do and the most commonly under-quoted. Here is what it actually involves, and what it actually costs.

Before and after

What actually changes

What you have now

210 L 60°C
Regular, or open-ventA cylinder in the airing cupboard, a cold tank and a feed-and-expansion tank in the loft. The oldest layout and the one that takes the most space.

What you end up with

Combi boilerOne box. The flue goes out through the wall, flow and return serve the radiators, and hot water is made the instant you open a tap.

What we take out

The hot water cylinder from the airing cupboard, and — on a regular system — the cold water tank and the small feed-and-expansion tank from the loft. The feed and vent pipes get capped off properly, not just cut and crimped.

What goes in

A combi on the wall, a new gas run if the existing one is undersized, new condensate pipework, a magnetic filter, and the whole system converted to sealed pressurised operation with a filling loop.

Why it costs more than a swap

It is two days rather than one, there is significantly more pipework, and there is a cylinder and up to two tanks to get out of the house. We add a flat £950 for the conversion and we show it as its own line on your quote rather than hiding it in the boiler price.

What we do not do

Plastering, tiling, decorating or joinery. When the cylinder comes out you get the cupboard back, but you get it back with pipe stubs capped and a floor that will need finishing. We say this before you buy because it is the single most common complaint in this trade.

When you should not convert

If two bathrooms get used at the same time, do not do it. A combi will disappoint you every morning. Keep the cylinder, fit a system boiler, and if the pressure is poor look at an unvented cylinder instead. Our quote tool will tell you this rather than take the order.

The conversion price is already in your quote. Tell the quote tool what you have now and what you want, and the uplift appears as its own line before you ever give us a name. Nothing is added afterwards.
